Just in time for the holidays, the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum will host their annual Model Train Display.  This 23rd annual event will include 10-15 layouts of trains brought in by local collectors, in addition to the permanent displays in the museum.

The model train display started 23 years ago by the original founder of the railroad museum.  He was a train enthusiast who wanted to share his passion with the community, as well as preserve the museum itself.

Having been built before the Civil War, the train station has a rich history within NoVA.  The town of Fairfax Station was built around the train tracks and many of the injured soldiers during the Manassas battles were transported at the station to Alexandria and D.C. hospitals.

The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum opened in 1987 and today it is operated by the Friends of Fairfax Station, Inc., a volunteer-only organization maintaining the museum.

This weekend’s event is expecting between 600-800 people to visit and gaze at the train displays.  From the size of a thumb to the twice the size of a football, this train variety is sure to have kids and their families “oohing” and “aahing” over the little details which go into these amazing exhibits.

Admission into this weekend’s event is $5 for adults and $1 for children.  The railroad museum is regularly open on Sundays from 1-4 p.m.  Check out the events calendar for more upcoming train displays.
